"Comedy Nation This Week" - January 20, 2012

Here's yesterday's episode of "Comedy Nation This Week" podcast with me, Laurie Buckley, Dave Plunkett and host Bill Bronner:

The panel discusses SOPA, PIPA, the North Carolina GOP Primary, the cruise ship disaster and more.

Tripptitorial: Corporations Want to Control Everything!

From this day forth, I will no longer be known as James Tripp. I will be known as James Tripp, Inc. I recently incorporated to avoid federal election spending limits and for the limited liability because I’m liable to do anything. Was’t Hamlet wronged Laertes? Never Hamlet. Twas Hamlet’s corporation.

People are not corporations. Sure, anybody can put an Inc. on their name, but a corporation is so much more than an individual. For example: an individual would not think to patent his own DNA, but a corporation would! As a matter of fact, I don’t own the licensing on several of my chromosomes, which can sometimes be a problem.

Corporations want to control everything! They want to control the internet! I’m afraid to look at porn on the internet, because they’re probably looking at me! The big media companies would like to turn the internet into something they can control, but they can’t control James Tripp!

I don’t care about the intellectual property rights of corporations; they’re rights they stole from my friends! I remember the non-union deals everyone was getting on those cable shows that ruined stand-up in the 80’s and 90’s. They were $300-$500 buyouts for unlimited rights. Now the producers of those shows are selling the performances on DVD, on Hulu, Netflix and any other means of distribution not yet created and none of my friends are getting paid anything! But Budd Friedman was able to buy a new monocle. Now he can see out of both eyes. Fie on corporations, I say! Fie!

You know what scares big media corporations? In the digital age, intellectual property originators don’t need them. We no longer need the middle man and creative corporate accountants to get paid. We just need to set up a website and reach our audience directly. That’s what scares them.

Corporate interests want to put a stop to this. They want to keep artists on the plantation. They’re trying to change the way the internet operates to make it more like radio and TV where they control the content.
They want to reshape the internet, which was created by the government with taxpayer money, so that their content and services---and those of companies that pay steep fees---will travel quickly along a “fast lane.” Everything else, like “Comedy Nation This Week” would be stuck in a “slow lane.” They want to charge different prices for different things. They also want to be able to charge website owners rates for them to be able to access their customers. They want to make money off of both sides.

SOPA and PIPA are a flanking a move in the corporate attack on net neutrality. You think traffic’s bad in LA, wait until you get in the internet slow lane. Hey, I have enough troubles already. Not only do I have road rage. I have walking rage. Now I’m gonna have internet rage.

Maybe it’s time to re-regulate the mainstream media. Regulation of vertical monopolies is not necessarily a bad thing. This is James Tripp, Inc.; I’ll be back next week with another Trippitorial, God Damnit!

thejamestripp James Tripp
is in favor of an "open Presidency." youtube.com/playlist?list=…

thejamestripp James Tripp
Just because #RickPerry suspended his pants, that's no reason not to tweet the #NCDebate.

thejamestripp James Tripp
They have to stop making these introductory films for the debates.

We get it.

thejamestripp James Tripp
likes the urgent music.

We need another debate during the debate.

They're all wearing the same suit. It's #RichardNixon 's suit.

Karaoke singing opens.

It's good to be here with Ted Healy and #theThreeStooges.

Being offending is the best defense. #Newt

I'm shocked...shocked to find there's gambling...

Now it's the elite media that's to blame!

#Newt should have thought to bring God into it. One for #Santorum.

There's a lot of #naturalgas onstage.

Crony capitalism was part of the #Halliburton #Bush #Cheney administration.

#Romney never answered the #Bain question.

I hope #RickSantorum is #praying now.

"There are three programs I would cut..."

"We need a military so strong that #MittRomney doesn't have to serve in it."

#Obama has lowered taxes.

I hate when our #freedom is robbed. #Santorum

The expression on #MittRomney 's face makes it seem like he has a hot water bottle in his pants.

I'm converting all my #RickPerry is stupid #jokes into #MittRomney is stupid #jokes.

#Newt is pitching his book and website.

Which candidate will drop out during the commercial break?

They're all still there.

We need to send someone to Washington who's lived in #Hawaii.

thejamestripp James Tripp
#Romney is full of ###.

thejamestripp James Tripp
How many rounds of golf has #Romney played?

Aw, shucks! #Santorum

#God is part of the #99%.

Boo! #SOPA

"I'm standing for freedom." Did #MittRomney write that line?

#MittRomney is lying.

#MikeDukakis was the son of immigrants too.

#MittRomney likes to repeat "Get to the back of the line."

thejamestripp James Tripp
Is that #NewtGingrich 's wife or the head they found in the #HollywoodHills?

#MittRomney is trying to appear aloof.

Did #RickSantorum just blow that mike?

#Newt is referencing people no one in #NC remembers.

The mob rules! #King Caesar yields!

We don't need someone talking to us like a professor. #Gingrich #Newt

#MittRomney keeps repeating #Freedom. His idea?

"You voted before Reagan was Reagan..." Huh? #Santorum

thejamestripp James Tripp
Soon there will only be three and #BuddyRoemer.

Live Tweets From GOP Debate Part XII

Then there were five...too many...

I joined the North Carolina debate, rooting for Huntsman, already in progress:

thejamestripp James Tripp
Romney doesn't believe in same sex marriage, he believes in marriage between a man and as many women who will say I do.

Does Santorum have a job?

What could we train Newt to do?

Bankruptcy is an opportunity to buy up a business, cut it up and sell it.

No homework on Friday!

Romney will probably release his tax records depending on what you mean by "tax records."

I wish I could quote the Brookings Institute.

Newt wants to fire grown bread winners and replace them with their children.

I don't think the Republicans should give Newt this job. He should get another job.

thejamestripp James Tripp
Newt thinks he's teaching a college course where he makes you buy his book.

Rick Perry will be in the alley pissing on the homeless after the debate.

How are they going to pay for this military buildup?

Mitt must be pro-gun. He keeps shooting himself in the foot.

Mitt should go hunting with Dick Cheney.

N.R.A. Member: "Guns don't kill people. We do."

My Pac can beat up your Pac!

The old Pot calling the kettle a scum bag.

Poor Romney. He wants to play with his Super Pacs, but it would be illegal.

thejamestripp James Tripp
Perry needs a predator drone to fly around his brain and respond to any activity it may see.

That’s all I can tweet, I can’t tweet no more!

"The Free Speech Show" - Premiere Episode - January 13, 2012

Here's yesterday's premiere podcast of the "Free Speech Show" with me, Laurie Buckley, Dave Plunkett, January Thomas and host Bill Bronner:

Are Two Parties Enough (For a Real Democracy)?

Two political parties for one country is two too many---especially these two. Two-two parties goodbye.

The Democrat and Republican parties are different legs on the same beast and I hope they don’t lift them up.

In any modern election cycle, the same special interests finance both sides, which is waste of good money the board could be using to give themselves bigger bonuses. Why should these rich corporations have to spend twice the amount of money for the same influence they’ll be granted if either side wins? Talk about wasting resources.

It doesn’t matter whether a Republican or Democrat is in office, the same lobbyist will also be. We need two political parties like we need the hole in Mitt Romney’s head. Everyone should just follow me and the enigma is I’m not going anywhere.

We need a new American Whig party to defeat the imperial rule of the Republicrats! It’s like a fisherman once told me, “Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish, and I’m out of a job!”

I say we should bring back Thomas Jefferson’s Democratic-Republican Party. It’s about time somebody took aim against Alexander Hamilton! Phooey on those Federalists, I say! Phooey!

Myself, I’m a member of your party, because I believe in the things that you believe in: the good things, the right things, the things that make us all proud to be Americans. It is the party of a thousand points of view and I agree with every one of them.

"Comedy Nation This Week" - Premiere Episode - January 13, 2012

Here's yesterday's premiere podcast of "Comedy Nation This Week" with me, Laurie Buckley, Dave Plunkett and host Bill Bronner:

Tripptitorial: Campaign Self-Financing

We have to change the way campaigns are financed. Too many rich people are running vanity campaigns with unlimited self-financing. Contributors want bang for their buck. When these kinds of candidates get into office they’re going to owe themselves favors, which I think is a sin in the Catholic Church.

Are these the kind of representatives we want in Washington? Are these the kinds of representatives we still want in Washington?

According to followthemoney.org, Mitt Romney contributed 65.04 % of his 2002 campaign for
Massachusetts Governor himself for a total of $6,150,570. And what did he get for his six million dollars?
The office of Governor of the state of Massachusetts. He’s no Oscar Goldman.

When he ran for Governor in a liberal state, he ran as a liberal Republican. When he decided to run for President in 2008, some of his liberal positions did not mesh with the far right Republican base he needed to win in the primaries. But he was the Six Million Dollar Man. “We can rebuild him. We can make him more conservative than he was.”

But his campaign needed more money--- more of Mitt’s money. Romney’s campaign for President raised $88.5 million in 2007, according to opensecrets.org, but $35.4 million of that was contributed by the candidate, which turned out to be a bad investment. He was no Steve Austin. Even “The Bionic Woman” ran for three years, although I didn’t really watch the remake…but what you’re listening to has digressed.

In this election cycle, Romney has his own Pac of Pacs and Super Pacs and mediocre Pacs which can contribute to his campaign. Is it fair for one man to have so many Pacs when I don’t even have one? I say, “No.” And it wouldn’t surprise me if the Mrs. had a Pac, man! What a horrible bump in a monologue that seemed to be leading somewhere.

Jon Huntsman has self-financed 50% of his campaign according to opensecrets.org, contributing $2,249,481 through September 30, 2011.

Governor Rick Perry contributed no money to his own campaign, so he’s not as dumb as he may seem.

Herman Cain contributed 13% of the total cost of his campaign through September 30, 2011 or $675,000. That’s a lot of pizza dough and an offer a lot of people refused.

Newt Gingrich so far has not contributed to his own campaign. I guess they wouldn’t let him charge it.
“Well, I’d contribute to my campaign, if I could just set up some kind of revolving credit plan…” This makes him more of a George W. Bush Republican than a Reagan Republican. He’ll take you to war, but only if he doesn’t have to pay for it until much later---like when he’s out of office.

Even Rick Santorum is spending his own money on his campaign, approximately $45,199, representing 4% of his budget, when what he really ought to be doing is putting that money in the basket on Sunday. Can I get an "Amen?"

Fred Karger, the first openly gay man to seek the Republican nomination, confirming the fact that he’s more confused than even he realizes, contributed $300,924 to his run which represented 84% of his campaign budget through September 30.

Former Governor Buddy Roemer, the only Presidential candidate talking about campaign finance reform spent $45,100 of his own money just to be excluded from the debates for not having enough money. Roemer made a pledge not to accept any Pac money or pledges greater than $100, so we won’t be hearing any more about him.

If I run for president, I pledge not to accept any campaign contributions, especially from myself.
It’s one thing to throw my vote away, but my money? Maybe my campaign can get a bailout from the government. It really doesn’t matter which one.

Live Tweets From GOP Debate Part XI

thejamestripp James Tripp
will be live tweeting tonight's Republican debate beginning at 6 pm PST and rooting for Bachmann.

thejamestripp James Tripp
Will be live tweeting the twits starting at 6 pm PST.

thejamestripp James Tripp
And then there were six they let into the debates...

Just because we can tweet our opinions, doesn't mean that corporations won't control the results of this election.

Being a CEO is not being a CEO.

I wish I had the experience of working in the real economy, but I can't get a job.

I think we should elect Romney and let him break up the United States and sell off the 50 states.

"Pretty darn good" is pretty strong language, Rick.

I forgot Perry was still in this race.

According to Santorum, the government drinks Tab.

The word Gobbeldygook is not used enough in debates.

Attacking Obama's Foreign Policy is like thinking Romney can be President.

thejamestripp James Tripp
I hate when our country's freedom is put in jeopardy.

Newt is promising pork for NH. Leave that to their reps.

"How can I defend something I didn't write with something I'm not saying?"

I would like to mandate that Rick Santorum use contraception.

George S. is winning the debate.

Romney wants Justices to legislate.

Are "real viewers" incorporated?

I'd like to see the candidates marry each other.

Moderator did a follow up question that did not follow the answer. Not good on his feet.

War on religion! We start bombing at 5 o'clock!

Huntsman is correct [about Afghanistan].

thejamestripp James Tripp
Rick Perry should go back to Texas.

Newt defeated the Soviet Empire!

How are these heroes going to pay for an increase in troops?

"Sanctions lead to war." Tell that to Japan in 1941.

This panel is kind of gay without Michele Bachmann.

Perry wants to get America working again by re-invading Iraq!

We can get Halliburton working again!

"We have to open up American markets in Chinese neighborhoods."

I don't speak Chinese, but if I did, that's not what I'd say.

thejamestripp James Tripp
is the proud great grandson of Irish-American immigrants, who came to this country when they couldn't grow any more potatoes for their still

Debate ended early. Did they run out of questions or answers?

thejamestripp James Tripp
I didn't know this was a debate of pundits!
